How Does Traffic Light Design Work?
Traffic Light is a key facility for traffic management, and its design principles contain sophisticated scientific and engineering knowledge.
From the perspective of optical principle, the color choice of traffic lights has its own significance. Red light has a long wavelength, is not easily scattered when propagating in the air, and can be clearly seen by the driver at a longer distance, so it is designated as a stop signal. The contrast between green light and red light is high, and the human eye is more sensitive to green as a traffic signal. The yellow light is in between, serving as a transitional reminder that the driver is ready to stop or start.
In terms of circuit control, the traffic signal is managed by the controller to turn the light on and off and the duration. In the early days, signals were switched at fixed intervals through simple timing circuits. Today, more advanced control systems take into account factors such as traffic flow at intersections, peak and peak periods. For example, in the period of heavy traffic, extend the green time to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. Moreover, some traffic lights also have fault detection and emergency handling functions, when a light fails, it can automatically switch to the safety mode, such as flashing yellow light, prompting the driver to pass cautiously.
From the installation position and height design, it is necessary to ensure that the signal light has good visibility in all directions of the intersection. The height is moderate, it will not be blocked by surrounding objects, and it can facilitate the driver of different types of vehicles to observe clearly, ensuring the safety and order of traffic.
